Dec 28, 2020 · It turned out that I did not just need new pads and rotors like most brake jobs. That would have been too easy. I needed new brake calipers on three of the wheels. My mechanic said it was a miracle I was able to stop at all. Unfortunately the price was not a miracle. The bill would have come to well over $1000. Jul 11, 2005 · Ok, I got a decent pair of ceramic brake pads from Advance Auto Parts. "Friction Master by Morse" brand. $45 bucks. First new set of pads on a 2004 G.P. GTP CompG. 15,000 miles.

  • You may want to buy a good used caliper and rebuild it with new seals instead, if yours is badly corroded. But remember, a junkyard caliper could even be worse than the one you're replacing! If your wallet allows, the simplest, and wisest option is always a brand new caliper! Ultimately it comes down to budget.

  • As for the smoking brakes when I went down the mountain I'm not exactly sure. It occurred twice, once before all the warning lights and ABS loss and once after. I have no idea why it happened the first time. I had ABS, new rotors, new pads, and no obvious braking issues (except the smoking, after the fact).

Yeah, well almost every itty bitty sedan, domestic truck, and similar vehicles I test drive up and down a hill near our dealership (fair steep, curvy, great for loading up a car on a test drive) burns the brakes by the time I get to the bottom of the hill, they're usually smoking and I heavily engine brake (to test the trans and load the engine up.)

I changed the front rotors and pads onmy 2007 MDX. Everything went smoothly, and I was actually pretty surprised at how easy it was. I'm certain I torqued everything down properly, put everything back properly, etc. I followed the break-in procedure and upon arriving back to my garage, I noticed both sides smoking slightly and a hot brake smell. I have replaced calipers and hoses on both rear sides several times, I've replaced the ABS box but the caliper on the rear drivers side is still sticking and is getting over 100° hotter than the other brakes from just a nine mile trip with a few stops but mostly its continuous driving between 45-60 MPH.
